DIY vs. the shop: what's worth doing yourself
We respect DIY. We also see the cars that come in after DIY went sideways. Here's our honest take on where the line should be.
Great DIY jobs
Air filters, cabin filters, wiper blades, headlight bulbs, battery swaps on accessible cars, and topping off fluids. None of these need special tools or torque specs that matter.
OK if you have the gear
Oil changes, brake pads (with proper torque wrenches), spark plugs on most engines. Done right, you save money. Done wrong, you cross-thread a drain plug or warp a rotor.
Leave it to a shop
Anything involving the cooling system under pressure, transmission service on modern automatics, ABS bleeding, ADAS calibration, or timing components. The cost of getting it wrong dwarfs the labor savings.
When in doubt
We'll happily quote a job and tell you honestly if it's worth doing yourself. Sometimes the right answer is "do it yourself, here's the torque spec."
