Tire pressure, tread, and the truth about the penny test
Dec 18, 2025 4 min read
Tires are the only part of your car touching the road. They deserve more attention than they usually get.
Pressure: check monthly, cold
Use the spec on the door jamb sticker, not the number on the tire sidewall (that's a max). Underinflation by 5 psi can cost 1–2 mpg and dramatically shortens tire life.
The penny test is outdated
It tells you when the tire is legally bald (2/32") — long after wet-weather grip has gone. Replace at 4/32" if you drive in rain, and don't wait.
Uneven wear is a warning
Inside or outside edge wear means alignment. Center wear means overinflation. Edge cupping points to suspension. We diagnose all three.
